Things about Hosting

Well if you don’t all ready know, i pretty much lost all my data for ygrab.com due to the host going under and not letting anyone know. So basically i didnt have a back up which is fail on my part. This would have been devastating if my mini-sites and other sites were hosted with this company. So lets discuss what you should do for safety with your sites while they are actually sites.

1. Make regular back-ups (try to make one everyday !!!)

2. Make sure your systems are up to date and are functional with the host

3. Keep all files you used to create the site even if they may not be the most recent files.

4. Do not ever rely on the host to keep your site alive.

5. Obviously PAY YOUR BILL!

My biggest mistake was that i didnt make a recent back up. I should have made one when i re-contructed my site to the design it is now. I lost a couple unpublished articles and obviously my archives but i did have all my design files and the source files for the website itself. This would be 3 on my list there. So it was not a complete loss but rather a disappointing loss.

Now lets dicuss what you should look for in a host.

1. How long they have been in business. (Paying that little extra for a reliable company may pay off in the end)

2. Find a company with live support 24/7 (Never know if a server will go down)

3. Find a company that suits your needs (Space, Bandwidth, Fantastico, ect…)

4. Always talk with the company and or current customers about the service

5. Companies that claim 100% is BS. It is almost impossible to have a server up 100% of the time unless you are shelling out huge amounts of money to have the account hosted on many different servers throughout the world.

All of these things i have pointed out should be common sense. I know this was prolly useless for most of you but im doing this as a reminder for my self and for everyone else. Do not let this happen to YOU!
