Day 2 7DBBD: Choosing a Domain Name

This is the most crucial subject when it comes to the domain industry. Choosing a domain name can mean many many different things. You can choose a name for your business or just to resell. The options are endless when choosing domain names and why. Right now i will discuss what to look for and why to choose certain domain names for making a lean domain portfolio.

First thing i would like to point out is that the more generic a domain name the better. The length or sound of the name can mean nothing if the domain is not generic at all. Another misconception i would like to point out to people is that just because it is 4 letters does not make it a great domain name.

Keywords: These are what set your domain apart from everything else. Finding domains that have keywords that work together are key in this industry.

Search: When deciding on a domain for your portfolio, search is extremely important. If the domain has high search value in its keywords then there is a chance there could be type-ins. On top of that it shows that a domain would benefit from a developed website.

PPC(PayPerClick): This is not a major one but could be a selling point for a company that is paying $4 a click on adsense. On top of that if companies are willing to pay up good money for the keywords in the domain you can bet the domain worth something.

There are many many more things that go in to the value of a domain but these are 3 major things that i look at when purchasing domain names. If you have anything you want to add to this be my guest and make a comment.

Task:

Check out recent top domain name sales and try to pin point why they sold for the amount they did. You can find top sales at DNJournal.com or Namebio.com.

A resource to find a good metrics to domains is Estibot.com. Now do not take the value that it pops out so literally but look more at the figures it pops out for the search and stuff like that.
